Found some fantastic cotton velvet, dress weight, in one of my favourite
stores (BL Joshi UK Ltd, in Wembley) for £4 a metre, 114cm wide (about
44"), and March's Sewing World magazine has a lovely article and pix of
bits of the Wade Costume Collection (which one may otherwise only view
by appointment).

The velvet comes in black (very dense, nice short pile), and several
other colours. I've sent for sample swatches.
